Over a decade sales experience here. So many people in the comments appear to misunderstand what Jordan is saying. The basics of sales is asking questions to have your client tell you what they want. Then we use the information to tailor our product to their wants and needs. That's all there is on the surface level. To go a little deeper, there's more to it than that. During the question phase we attempt to find out the possible pain points of the client who may have had things they didn't like about their pen in the past, or where the pen failed in a crucial moment, or the ink leaked out and ruined an important document. You can use all this information to reinforce the customer's desire to buy your specific product because you will show them how your particular pen addresses all those fears. Once they want your product and are confident in your company we go for a close. To create urgency and sell on the spot we may introduce a discount that only applies today.

So what Belfort is saying is rather than forcing an unneeded pen down someone's throat, you first need to artificially create the illusion that the pen is needed and then shove the now thoroughly lubricated pen down their throat. You need to get people to believe that they must continually want to consume more garbage so that you can profit off their irresponsible-by-design decisions.

My first job was door 2 door sales. Did outside sales for over 15 years. I can confidently say no Manager, Supervisor, Owner, has ever complimented me for bot selling to someone not in need. The opposite is notoriously true about sales, and its majorly in part because of Belfort and his old training tactics. This is the EXACT reason that sales ppl are now so despised. They will and are trained to ABC your ass....Always Be Closing. PERIOD

He makes a lot of good points, and they're all good for a well-known product (such as a pen). If someone's already well-aware of what your product is, and they aren't looking for one, you aren't going to make the sale no matter how hard you push. Not to mention, you're just going to annoy the hell out of them. And yes, there is the one in a million chance you'll sell someone a pen when they start the conversation with "No thanks, I don't need to buy a pen right now." But it's far, FAR more likely that by pushing it at that point, all you'll accomplish is wasting both of your time, and leaving them with a horrible impression of you and/or your company. "When I do need a pen (or car, or refrigerator, or whatever), I'm definitely not going to that pushy salesman who never shuts up. Clearly he doesn't care about what I want - he just wants to make a sale." While you may convince one in a million people who wouldn't have bought your product right now, you're sabotaging your future sales tremendously with a reputation of a persistent annoyance that they'd rather not deal with. So if you find out they're not in the market for it, wish them a nice day, feel free to offer them your business card if they think they may ever be interested in the future, but let it go and move on to the next potential sale. The greatest salesman in the world will not convince 100% of people to buy their product. THAT BEING SAID, as I said in the first sentence, that's true of a well-known product. The same is not true for selling someone where the potential customer doesn't know about the thing you're selling. The mistake a lot of salesmen make is the same example he described: "This pen is great - it writes upside-down, underwater, it never runs out of ink!" While these can be nice things to bring up (if they're true), you don't LEAD with them. Most people don't want a product they don't understand, even if it would benefit them. And they don't want to feel lectured, especially because in their mind, they already know they don't need the product, even though they don't know anything about it. Before the car was invented, imagine trying to sell the first car to someone. "This thing goes fast! You don't need to feed it hay!" "I already have a horse. I don't need to get anywhere that fast. Since we're living in an age before cars, I don't usually travel very far outside the city." Every day, people take out loans and buy products they either don't need, can't afford to pay back, or both. And if they sat down and thought about it rationally, they wouldn't have gone through with it. A salesman's job isn't to sell a product to the rational consumers. First, they make up a much smaller percentage of people than they'd like to believe. But the few who are rational are typically going to figure things out for themselves right away. If they do have questions, they'll come to you with them, and your sales pitch is going to be far less effective than them saying "Hey, I'll save $500 and get a product I like better if I go to your competitor." There may be a few sales to make here, but it's nothing compared to the irrational consumer. This person wants to be heard. This person wants to be seen. So you start with the problem your product can solve, rather than its features - it helps if it's something reflective. "What would you do if you lost your phone and couldn't find it? Sure, you could always buy a new one, but aside from the expense, how do you feel about your most personal information falling into the wrong hands if you don't find it in time?" "What if I told you we could pin-point your phone's location whenever you want, whether it got lost in a couch cushion, or at your parent's house, or even on the subway?" Finally, and this is a lesson that you see so many salesman fail at. Learn to SHUT UP and LET THE CUSTOMER TALK. You'll find the majority of times you make a sale are when you talked less than the customer. Again, they want to be SEEN. They want to be HEARD. In most sales (again, excluding the few rational consumers), you're selling a feeling, rather than a product.

You want me to sell you this pen? This is a pilot G2. It has an ergonomic grip with a tactile click and a wide bore ink reservoir. The ink flows smoothly and evenly as the G2 dances across the paper. The question isn't "Can I sell you this pen?" it's "Can you afford this pen?"

“Have a nice day, I’ll go find someone who wants a pen” said NO PEN SALESMAN EVER. Salespeople are masters of trying to make their square hole fit your round peg, and after the person buys the overpriced shitty pen they never actually needed, it’s up to the customer service people to deal with the fall out.
